You might think you've stumbled onto a scene from La Dolce Vita when the ROMAN HOLIDAY Ensemble appears at festivals and other events around the country. They specialize in ITALIAN MUSIC at its very best!
The San Diego-based Italian band specializes in high-energy productions featuring a delightful combination of Italian music, lively Italian dances, Italian songs, popular Italian-American songs of the decades, as well as contemporary hits and a touch of the Italian opera.
From "Funiculi Funicula" to the Godfather theme, from "That's Amore" to
"O Marie" and a special tribute to the hot Italian sounds of Louie Prima, ROMAN HOLIDAY has something for everyone--young and old-- to listen and dance to!
Now in its 17th year, the troupe has performed for countless Italian festivals and corporate events in cities throughout the West. ROMAN HOLIDAY was seen and heard in the grape festival scene of the 20th Century Fox film, A Walk In The Clouds , starring Keanu Reeves and Anthony Quinn. The film's sound track, on which one of ROMAN HOLIDAY'S songs is featured, recently received a Golden Globe Award.
The band produced the national bestseller, The Italian Wedding CD, which features all the lively and passionate songs traditionally heard at an Italian wedding reception. In addition to the wonderful song selections (produced in a state-of-the-art studio with up to 20 vocalists and musicians), The Italian Wedding CD features a "How To" booklet that guides the planner through each step of orchestrating the Italian wedding reception. From the "Grand March" to the "First Dance" to the "Tarantella" and "Money Dance," this CD is a must for any Italian bride or DJ who specializes in ethnic weddings.
According to Tony DiBona, the band's organizer, ROMAN HOLIDAY was initially formed to preserve the rich musical heritage brought to this country by Italian Americans. "At the time, I headed up a variety dance band, performing everything from swing to R & B to rock 'n' roll. But more and more, people from the Italian community kept on asking for the songs they remembered from their childhood and we knew we had to do our part in keeping that rich heritage alive." That was when ROMAN HOLIDAY was born.
And as fate would have it, the American community wanted to see and hear more of ROMAN HOLIDAY too--so the lively and colorful show went corporate!
ROMAN HOLIDAY'S musicians and dancers are professional entertainers, many of whom have had notable careers in Hollywood, Las Vegas and on the cruise ship and casino circuit.
Tony's wife, Giovanna, who serves as lead vocalist and show producer, also helps choreograph the dancers which often accompany the show--and designs the colorful costumes worn by the ensemble as well. "We are a true audience participation show . . .people just can't help getting up to dance or sing with us--we even teach them the tarantella!"
When she's not on the road with ROMAN HOLIDAY, Giovanna serves as director of communications for the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau. She was recently awarded a two-year grant from the National Italian American Foundation in Washington , DC for her efforts to preserve Italian American culture.
